"The thing is," the pirate said, and now he was looking directly at the judge, his one visible eye the color of dirty ice, "the thing is, when I took his wallet—theatrical gesture, you understand—he grabbed my wrist. Not violently. Just held it. And in that moment, which lasted perhaps three seconds, perhaps four, I remembered something from Port Royal, 1692, before the earthquake swallowed half the city. No, that's not right. I didn't remember it. I was remembering someone else remembering it, if you follow.
"There was a merchant there, Dutch fellow, sold provisions to anyone with coin—pirates, navy, didn't matter to him. He kept his accounts in a ledger thick as a Bible, and one day I watched him—or someone watched him, the distinction becomes academic after enough time—watched him tear out a page. Just tore it clean out. A whole page of debts, gone. When I asked why, he said the man who owed those debts had saved his daughter from drowning. 'So the debts are paid?' I asked.
